Be Authentic (Creativation 2018)

CHA 2018

This piece features a new Idea-ology Baseboard Frame.

I've used the largest in the set here (you get four different sizes, eight different styles in a package), they are made of sturdy book board and there are many ways you could use them.

I've attached this one to the front of a vintage book cover which also features a new Paper Doll along with a Hinge Clip, Star Adornment, Mini Plaquette, Quote Chip, Design Tape (Passport and Vintage), and Dapper Paper Stash.

My vintage book cover was pretty ratty to begin with so I sanded the edges of my paper stash and tinted them to match (click on the photo for a larger, lightbox view).

I always prep the surface of Tim's metal bits with a clear medium that's designed for metal then I can use any type of paint to cover it. Here, I used an off-white paint applied with a cosmetic sponge.

Dabbing on the paint creates a texture that is decidedly distress and helps grab the wash of walnut ink that I apply over the top after it's dry. I also like to apply a multi-purpose sealer as a final coat to protect the finish and give it a nice sheen.

The Mini Plaquettes are somewhat pristine right out of the box but no worries--they are easy to distress. I dabbed on a light coat of off-white paint and walnut ink then used a blunt toothpick to softly scrape off some of the paint that covered the numbers.

The plaquettes are packaged with tiny brads made to look like screws which really enhance the authenticity.

For more visual interest, I cut into the vintage book cover to create depth inside the frame opening and placed a vintage postcard of New York City's Woolworth Building in the background. I lined the inside edges of the frame with design tape and also used tape to trim the edges of the book cover paper.

To make the quote chips look distressed, I sanded the edges and rounded the corners and tinted them with Distress ink. Along with a painted star, I pasted some tiny strips of book paper near the paper doll's feet.

If you look closely behind his feet and legs you'll see that I've placed some baseboard scraps, cut to fit and painted to blend in. This filled the gap created by the thickness of the frame he is resting on.

The Baseboard Frames are a welcome addition to the Idea-ology product line and I can't wait to see what others will make with them.
