No. 10 for Christmas, 2022

Today, I'm sharing a nature-themed Christmas tag made with a fussy-cut bird from a Graphic 45 paper collection, mounted inside a handmade box lined with Christmas/Noel collage paper, and a piece of Tim Holtz Christmas ephemera.

The background was embossed with a Texture Fade, there's lots of Stickles, a bit of gold paint, a tiny scrap of muslin and a vintage button. I just don't do bows well so to balance the top I created a tiny paper scroll.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

No. 9 for Christmas, 2022

For this tag, I created a landscape with watercolors using a few stamps. I was mindful of my color choices (and their intensity) in order to create a sense of depth and realism for these somewhat contrary subjects. A general rule of thumb: Keep your colors dark and bright in the foreground, light and dull in the back.

I like to use hot press watercolor paper because the smooth surface makes the stamped images crisper. I trimmed the border with platinum Stickles and used Stampendous Clear Snow glitter on the branches and berries. The text and snowflakes are Remnant Rubs.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

No. 8 for Christmas, 2022

I wanted to make a Christmas tag inspired by a favorite artist, Wendy Addison, who puts on a special sale/show every year at Christmas. She uses paper rosettes in a lot of her work and that was my starting point along with a plan to use lots of glitter. ☺

I used vintage book paper and ephemera along with die-cut pieces (Carta Bella) covered with silver Stickles and dots made with off-white Scribbles.

I'm linking up to Simon's Monday challenge for this week's "Tag" theme.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

No. 7 for Christmas, 2022

Yes, it's another Christmas tag (I'm on a roll this year) and it features a vintage Santa figure from a Tim Holtz Christmas ephemera release.

I began with a scrapbook paper from Stamperia (Christmas Patchwork) and applied a clear embossed stencil layer (Holiday Script) to act as a resist for some Distress ink tinting. I ironed-off the embossing (see technique here) to keep the background smooth so I could use a tree stencil (Clear Scraps Pine Trees) over the top.

I used a pencil to trace the stencil outline then a brush to fill it in with white paint. The dried brush strokes provided some texture made more visible when I used inks for tinting.

Santa was pasted on next then a border was added using Simon's Tiny Dots stencil and texture paste. Final touches include a Remnant Rub and Stickles.

I'm linking up to Simon's Monday challenge for this week's "Tag" theme.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

No. 6 for Christmas, 2022

I used a Found Relative, a stamp (Mundo Holly, Ellen Hutson), printed tissue paper, scrapbook paper, a Remnant Rub, and glitter glues to make this tag.

I'm linking up to Simon's Monday challenge for this week's "Tag" theme.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

No. 5 for Christmas, 2022

I inherited multiple copies of professional portrait photographs of my great aunts and their relatives/friends (circa 1900-1940) mounted inside thick, tri-fold paper folders. Since I don't need to save, for example, ten copies of a graduation portrait of the same person, I recycle the folders to use in my artwork. That's what makes up the foundations for this tag.

It features a die-cut pattern of poinsettias (Tim Holtz) that were filled-in with Stickles along with a Christmas Collage Paper covering. I used a laser-printed vintage photo mounted inside an old Idea-ology sticker frame antiqued with paint and Liquid Pearls. The numerals were cut from scrapbook paper and covered with Stickles.

I'll share a tip for anyone who doesn't like the unavoidable shedding of glitter--just cover it with a layer of clear medium to seal it. And if you use a matt finish it creates a more subtle, vintage appearance.

I'm linking this one up to Simon's Monday challenge, this week's theme is Holiday Cheer.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

No. 4 for Christmas, 2022

I took inspiration for this tag from the cover of a vintage magazine (see it here). I traced the ornament design on watercolor paper and tinted it. I messed-up the background so I had to cut it out instead. It was pasted on Tim Holtz Christmas papers and embellished with Stickles.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

No. 3 for Christmas, 2022

I took inspiration for this Christmas tag from Paula Cheney and a piece she created several years ago for an Advent calendar (see it here).

I cut the wings from a vintage portrait folder and distressed with paint, sandpaper and crackle medium then mounted on paper, tissue scraps and fabric. The text was made with a Tim Holtz Christmas stencil and covered with Glossy Accents.

The crown was cut from a discarded book then covered with Stickles, Glossy Accents and Nuvo Crystal Drops. I outlined the edges with more Stickles and darkened them with a water-soluble graphite pencil.

The crowning jewel (so-to-speak) is a vintage button from my great aunt's collection.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

No. 2 for Christmas, 2022

Posting another Christmas tag today, this one inspired by a lovely make from Emma Williams (see it here).

The background is a scrapbook page, the wreath was hand-cut from cardboard then heat-embossed with metallic powders and trimmed with Stickles.

I used vellum inside the frame that was lightly distressed with inks on the backside and stamped with heat-embossed text. The scroll is a Remnant Rub.

The holly was die-cut from watercolor paper using a Tim Holtz set called Mixed Media Christmas. After tinting with inks, I used a clear medium and Rock Candy dry glitter to give it some sparkle. The berries were made dimensional with Glossy Accents.

The border was machine-stitched, darkened a bit with distress ink and embellished with more Stickles.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

No. 1 for Christmas, 2022

I've begun my annual tradition of making Christmas tags (to embellish gifts) and used everything but the kitchen sink for this one!

There's scraps of paper, a favorite fussy-cut stamp (Penny Black, Christmas Star), stencil marks, paint splatters, inks, gold paint and embossing, Rock Candy Stickles, die-cut text, etc., etc.

I felt kind of rusty, that I'd lost my "mojo," but I just kept messing with it and telling myself, you can't over-do for Christmas, right?

Maybe it will help to put the tree up and get some carols on. And so the season begins....

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Christmas Tag No. 7 for 2021

Couldn't help but use an image I stumbled across at the British Library's Photostream for a Christmas tag which I printed on regular computer paper then tinted with colored pencils and watercolor. I stamped the top and bottom to fill-in the white space (Tim Holtz Faded Type) after pasting on heavy-weight kraftstock cut to the shape of a #8 tag.

While it's hard to see, I used a white glitter glue (Stickles) over the snow areas and trimmed the borders with brown glitter and Liquid Pearls. The text is a Remnant Rub.

Merry Christmas Eve, everyone, I wish you the happiest of times with the ones you love.

Christmas Tag No. 6 for 2021

I recently discovered a vintage image (by photographer Monty Fresco) and just had to use it. After printing, it was fussy-cut and mounted on scrapbook paper (Stamperia Christmas Patchwork).

I decided to stamp some houses in the background (Carabelle Studio Dans la Rue) but I'd already pasted the image so I needed a mask. I'm sharing a quick technique which is to use a piece of deli wrap to make a pencil rubbing.

After stamping, I used some Stickles to trim the border and should mention that I tinted the photograph with inks and a paintbrush.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Christmas Tags No. 4 & 5 for 2021

I pulled out all the stops with this tag: Crackle medium, bronze metallic paint, Glossy Accents, Liquid Pearls, Stickles, stamping, a die-cut, and ribbon. It has rich jewel-tones and looks better in person (it was hard to photograph). I made it for Simon's Monday challenge which is "Cold as Ice."

Next up, a tag celebrating Old Saint Nick with an unusual technique that warrants an explanation. The background was a Graphic 45 paper of holly and berries and I laid strips of plaid paper on top then edged one side with glitter. I think it adds to the vintage vibe.

I'm hoping to crank out a few more tags before Christmas and you can be sure they'll include some kind of glitter glue. I've discovered the hard way that once the bottles are less than half-full, no matter if you store them upside-down, they eventually dry-out so I might as well use them!

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Christmas Tag No. 3 for 2021

I chose a simple design for this tag to emphasize all the detail in the tree. It was fussy-cut from Stamperia's Christmas Patchwork paper and then embellished with Stickles and Glossy Accents. The background paper is a faded, vintage, handwritten note and the text is a Remnant Rub.

This is my last link up to Simon's Monday challenge which is "Sparkle Mode." I could use my glitter glues every day of the week and a challenge like this one is certainly a favorite!

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Christmas Tag No. 2 for 2021

A background paper by Stamperia (Christmas Patchwork), a stamped then fussy-cut poinsettia (Penny Black Christmas Star), Glossy Accents to cover the tile letters and lots and lots of Stickles makes this my third entry this week for Simon's Monday challenge which is "Sparkle Mode."

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Christmas Tag No. 1 for 2021

Making Christmas tags by following along with Tim Holtz blog posts way back when was such great fun and I've continued to embrace the tag format ever since.

Nowdays, I use my holiday tags to decorate gifts and today I'm sharing the first one of, hopefully, twelve for this year. (See previous seasons here).

I punched postage-stamp shapes from a heat-embossed stamped image (Penny Black Tree of Holly) and pasted rows of them to create a background.

The poinsettia was stamped (Penny Black Christmas Star), tinted with Distress inks, cut-out and mounted to the surface. I added some fine, black lines for detail and used gold Stickles to trim the flower edges along with my last bottle of Rock Candy Distress Stickles (an absolute favorite product, sadly discontinued).

I stamped then fussy-cut the text (Penny Black Festive Season) and trimmed the tag with Nuvo Glitter Drops, sketchy pen ink and a ribbon topper.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

12 Tags for Christmas 2019 - New Year New Me

In previous years, my twelfth Christmas tag usually had a serious/religious theme (see herehere or here) but since I'm a little behind and it's already the New Year my last tag in this series is a spin on the New Year holiday instead.

Every year we get another chance to do things differently and I'm full of ideas on how to change things up. The list is long and I know some goals won't be met so I'll focus on the important ones like more patience and more kindness. More sleep wouldn't hurt either 😏.

Happy New Year everyone--let's make it a great one!

12 Tags for Christmas 2019 - Winter Wonderland

I've used a die-cut for this year's Tag #11 called Dancing Snowflake by Poppy Stamps.

I covered it with dimensional paint and glitter (Scribbles and Nuvo Glitter Drops) and, while it's hard to see, I put Glossy Accents inside areas of the snowflakes.

It sure seems like this was the year for using everything in my craft space that comes in a little squeeze bottle with a teeny-tiny spout!

The text is a Remnant Rub and the background paper was made by Martha Stewart and featured ombré colors (both products purchased long-ago).

12 Tags for Christmas 2019 - Peace Love Joy

Wishing all of you peace, love and joy this Christmas!

Tag 10 for Christmas 2019 is book paper covered with tissue, pasted with die-cut pieces and tinted/embellished with ink, paint and glitter.

The black and red tinting was created using ink pens and a waterbrush. I draw the ink lines and before they dry, I use the brush to spread/blur the color.

The die-cut pieces (Tim Holtz Poinsettia) came from Thelma's Christmas card.

The best feature here is the area inside the poinsettia where I applied Rock Candy Distress Stickles. Remember this stuff? It's a product that's been discontinued and one I wish they'd bring back!

12 Tags for Christmas 2019 - All is Calm

I am smitten with this very early photograph of three sisters by Carl Gustav Oehme taken in 1845. Back then Christmas celebrations were nothing like the customs of today but, around this time in America, Christmas trees and cards were beginning to appear.

I trimmed and tinted the photo, combined it with some Tim Holtz Christmas ephemera and embellished it with Stickles.

This is tag #9 in my ongoing quest for 12 for 2019.
