No. 8 for Christmas, 2022

I wanted to make a Christmas tag inspired by a favorite artist, Wendy Addison, who puts on a special sale/show every year at Christmas. She uses paper rosettes in a lot of her work and that was my starting point along with a plan to use lots of glitter. ☺

I used vintage book paper and ephemera along with die-cut pieces (Carta Bella) covered with silver Stickles and dots made with off-white Scribbles.

I'm linking up to Simon's Monday challenge for this week's "Tag" theme.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

No. 2 for Christmas, 2022

Posting another Christmas tag today, this one inspired by a lovely make from Emma Williams (see it here).

The background is a scrapbook page, the wreath was hand-cut from cardboard then heat-embossed with metallic powders and trimmed with Stickles.

I used vellum inside the frame that was lightly distressed with inks on the backside and stamped with heat-embossed text. The scroll is a Remnant Rub.

The holly was die-cut from watercolor paper using a Tim Holtz set called Mixed Media Christmas. After tinting with inks, I used a clear medium and Rock Candy dry glitter to give it some sparkle. The berries were made dimensional with Glossy Accents.

The border was machine-stitched, darkened a bit with distress ink and embellished with more Stickles.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Delicate Flowers

After much experimentation, I've finally settled on the best way to use my recently purchased jar of Ranger's Distress Clear Rock Candy Dry Glitter.

It used to be made as a wet product contained in a Stickles bottle and I loved this stuff. Sure, it could reactivate inks or wrinkle paper due to its high moisture content but I could work around this--no problem.

So I set about mixing various mediums with the dry glitter to use in an empty squeeze bottle like before. Unfortunately nothing I tried worked, I went back to basics, and this card illustrates a technique that will have to do.

Using Simon's Delicate Flowers stamp set on a page of Paper Stash, I fussy-cut then pasted an arrangement on more Paper Stash (this time stained with Seedless Preserves) and mounted on black paper using strips of the same for balance.

I painted on small sections of fluid matte medium then used my fingers to lightly sprinkle the dry glitter over the area before the medium dried. I found that a light application was better than a dump (like you would do with embossing powder) and sometimes it was necessary to apply two coats to get the look I was going for.

I'm linking to Simon, this week's prompt is "Use Die-Cuts" (how I made the card text).

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Sunny Bee

Greeting Card

Prompted by Simon's Monday challenge to make something "Bright and Cheerful," I chose to use their Sunflower Garden stamp set and a mix of watercolors.

My somewhat less conventional mounting was done by cutting the watercolor 1/4" from the outside edge leaving two pieces, trimming the inside piece again to create a gap and then reassembling on black cardstock.

The text was die cut in multiples and stacked for dimension. The bee was cut from a pattern and lined with tissue paper to provide body color and luminescent wings.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

No. 92

Greeting Card

Mom turns 92 in about a week and this is the card I made for her. I used a stencil and white paint over a piece of scrapbook paper then tinted it slightly with colored pencils and inks.

I glued a scrap of white mulberry paper on the back of a die-cut butterfly then embellished it with glossy accents. The label was hand-made then stamped. The corner bits are just paper hole punches.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Christmas Tags No. 4 & 5 for 2021

I pulled out all the stops with this tag: Crackle medium, bronze metallic paint, Glossy Accents, Liquid Pearls, Stickles, stamping, a die-cut, and ribbon. It has rich jewel-tones and looks better in person (it was hard to photograph). I made it for Simon's Monday challenge which is "Cold as Ice."

Next up, a tag celebrating Old Saint Nick with an unusual technique that warrants an explanation. The background was a Graphic 45 paper of holly and berries and I laid strips of plaid paper on top then edged one side with glitter. I think it adds to the vintage vibe.

I'm hoping to crank out a few more tags before Christmas and you can be sure they'll include some kind of glitter glue. I've discovered the hard way that once the bottles are less than half-full, no matter if you store them upside-down, they eventually dry-out so I might as well use them!

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

More Sunshine Flowers

This image (from Simon's Sunshine Flowers set) was stamped on hot press 140 lb. watercolor paper and then fussy-cut. The flowers were tinted with dollar-store markers and water. I added some Liquid Pearls to embellish. The die-cut text was layered using three stacks.

I'm linking to Simon's Monday challenge, this week's theme is "stamp it."

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Glimmersmitz

greeting card

A head start on Christmas cards? Maybe. But a call to create with "glimmer and sparkle" at the Simon Monday challenge was really the push for making this one. What's Christmas without some shiny bits--am I right?

I used Pink ombré paper (Martha Stewart) covered with Tissue Wrap (Holtz) trimmed to fit around Poinsetta Pieces die-cuts (Holtz) that were cut from a bronze metallic envelope.

Copper Liquid Pearls, some Stickles, and white Scribbles provided the glitz. I heat embossed the white text and outlined one side of the letters with an extra-fine black marker to create a 3D effect.

Divertimento

Divertimento is a musical genre with most examples from the 18th century. The mood is lighthearted and generally composed for a small ensemble. It was the style of music I listened to (Mozart) while crafting this tag (hence the name of my post) and it seems to suit this fashionable lady.

The style of her "leg of mutton" sleeves dates from the 1840's and some were so large it was necessary to turn sideways to get through a door. If you'd like to see more examples, here's a link.

The background for the tag was made from an ivory sheet of mulberry paper that was dry embossed (Roses) and tinted with inks and paint. The fence and flowers are die-cuts (Gothic Gate and Flower Jar).

I cut the flowers from multi-color paper (Lavinia Garden Dance) and stamped them with gray archival ink. The lady's flowers and dress were tinted with Pitt brush pens.

I'm linking up to Simon this week, dry emboss is the challenge.

And as always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Glitter Gone Wild

Gitter gone wild is the name of this post for obvious reasons--I used it to embellish this birthday card for my niece. (If you click on the photo to view it in the light box feature you'll see the glitter in more detail.)

I began by stamping (Simon's Delicate Flowers and a Martha Stewart butterfly) on watercolor paper with clear embossing ink and UTEE. Remember this stuff? UTEE stands for ultra thick embossing powder and I guess it fell out of favor because I seldom see anyone using it anymore.

After applying watercolors for tint, I ironed off the embossing. When you do, the weight of the iron spreads the embossing out and you end up with slightly thicker lines that also act as a resist. If you'd like to know more about this technique here's a link to a popular post for the particulars.

I thought I needed more contrast so I outlined the images with a fine-tip black marker. Still not happy, I dug out my glitter (Stickles) and the extra color and sparkle seemed to do the trick.

I used a stencil (Simon's Tiny Dots) with white texture paste, a Simon die-cut for the sentiment and machine-stitched it to the card base using white thread.

Simon Says use heat embossing this week so I'm linking up to the Monday challenge.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

cresc. a poco.

Making some delicate floral book paper die cuts was the starting point for this tag, they were pasted over a scrap of printed tissue paper using a background of polka dots.

The bird image (which would make a fine stamp) was found at the British Library (here's the link) and sits on another scrap of tissue paper in the foreground.

I adjusted the values using Distress ink and colored pencils to provide stronger contrast and depth and the text is from some vintage sheet music.

I'm linking up with Simon's Monday challenge, the theme this week is "Beautiful Flowers."

Beautiful to Me

Shaker Greeting Card

Simon says, "make a shaker card." What?! Never done that before but sure, why not? I had to find some how-to videos to get an idea of where to begin and, in the end, I have a new appreciation for this engineering feat.

Mine was made using a piece of craft foam as the dam behind a thin piece of acetate. I used a black Sharpie to disguise the foam edges, filled it with vintage glitter (circa 1920-30), covered it with a die-cut page from an old book (Simon Says Stamp Devonshire) and made some paper punch lace (Martha Stewart).

I re-cut the butterfly out of black paper and placed it over the acetate and heat embossed text (Simon Says Stamp Delicate Flowers) using black ink and clear powder.

The background page is from Prima Epiphany and it was mounted on black card stock. I always line the insides of my black cards with a piece of light paper so you can write on it with a regular pen. A little Distress Ink and some white paint splatters completed the look.

I had no idea how much glitter to use and may have used too much and the hardest part? Figuring out how to line up and paste the shaker on the front of the card while working with it upside down so the glitter wouldn't fall out. If I make any more, I should probably watch a few more videos ☺.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Tell Your Story

I've got this thing about seeing sky inside a frame so I played around with the idea this week and I'm linking this tag to Simon's Monday challenge, "Frame It."

The girl is a Baseboard Doll (Tim Holtz) that I stripped from her backing and you may have guessed that's a flower cut from the Wallflower paper stash.

The frame is a tiny die cut from Stampendous that I crackled with medium, the text is a Remnant Rub and I used Ranger's Liquid Pearls on the inside edge of the frame.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

12 Tags for Christmas 2019 - Winter Wonderland

I've used a die-cut for this year's Tag #11 called Dancing Snowflake by Poppy Stamps.

I covered it with dimensional paint and glitter (Scribbles and Nuvo Glitter Drops) and, while it's hard to see, I put Glossy Accents inside areas of the snowflakes.

It sure seems like this was the year for using everything in my craft space that comes in a little squeeze bottle with a teeny-tiny spout!

The text is a Remnant Rub and the background paper was made by Martha Stewart and featured ombré colors (both products purchased long-ago).

12 Tags for Christmas 2019 - Peace Love Joy

Wishing all of you peace, love and joy this Christmas!

Tag 10 for Christmas 2019 is book paper covered with tissue, pasted with die-cut pieces and tinted/embellished with ink, paint and glitter.

The black and red tinting was created using ink pens and a waterbrush. I draw the ink lines and before they dry, I use the brush to spread/blur the color.

The die-cut pieces (Tim Holtz Poinsettia) came from Thelma's Christmas card.

The best feature here is the area inside the poinsettia where I applied Rock Candy Distress Stickles. Remember this stuff? It's a product that's been discontinued and one I wish they'd bring back!

12 Tags for Christmas 2019 - Happiness & Cheer

This one is made of a black cardstock background covered with poinsettia die-cuts (Tim Holtz) and embellished with tints and glitter glues.

This was truly a learning experience: It's hard to cut thin papers with intricate dies (you can't get the design out without tearing it) so, thanks to Google, I learned about using dryer sheets or waxed paper which helped a lot.

Also, it was the first time making my own glitter glue. I needed red but didn't have anything but the loose stuff and an empty Stickles container (you must save these--they are SO useful).

The mix was approx. 3/4 glitter to 1/4 fluid medium and I have to say it worked well.

This was a fun tag to make because I went kind of glitter-crazy and it's perfect for linking up to Simon's Monday challenge this week which is "Let's Sparkle."

12 Tags for Christmas 2019 - Be Good

Underneath the many layers of tints, texture paste and crackle medium is a mixed media die-cut (Tim Holtz) fashioned from brown card stock.

The frame is a Spellbinders die-cut covered with dimensional paint (Scribbles) which was also used on the large text (an image transfer).

Inside the frame is a Photobooth image (Tim Holtz), I used dots of Scribbles and Stickles (glitter glue) for bling and a strip of washi tape to balance out the intentional off-center placement of frame and text.

It will be easy to link-up with Simon's Monday challenge this week as I work through more of my holiday tags. The theme is "Let's Sparkle" and I've never made a Christmas tag EVER without using glitter--it just wouldn't be Christmas without it!

12 Tags for Christmas 2019 - Pine Grosbeak

The idea for this third Christmas tag for 2019 was a happy accident that I followed through on with a few deviations in between.  Let me explain.

I die-cut the holly (Tim Holtz Mixed Media Christmas) from a book page and placed it on top of some paper scraps. One of them was an enlarged half-tone image from a vintage book and I thought the various dots peaking through looked cool so I decided to use it.

The bird was cut from a vintage book. It was originally black and white and I added color with red ink and collaged over the branches. I've never seen this bird myself but they live in colder climates. Imagine coming across one foraging in the snow! I love birds :-)

I created an oval with dimensional paint drops (Scribbles) and painted over the outside section to create the vignette.

I distressed it with sanding, added the washi tape and a Remnant Rub and then made it an official Christmas tag by embellishing it with platinum Stickles.

I'm linking to Simon's "Tape It Up" Monday challenge.

Here's a link to Christmas tags from previous years if you'd like to see more (or use the link in the label section below).

Automatic

Lyrics from a song by Miranda Lambert is the text typed on this tag that features wildflowers in canning jars.

It's my first time working with a stamp set (Tim Holtz Flower Jar) that has matching dies and I cut the images out of tissue paper so I could layer the arrangement without adding bulk.

The background is a page from the Tim Holtz Etcetera paper stash.

I used sepia archival ink on the flowers but in hindsight, I probably should have used black.

I tinted the flowers with dilute acrylic paint so it would be waterproof during the pasting process.

I like the scale of this set (it's tiny) but that does make it more tedious to use. And there are also some design challenges like a solution for the flower stems that appear inside the jar.

I penciled-in the lower stems but they would have looked better with more defined edges (less blurry). I'll work on my technique for the next time!

I think it would be very hard to arrange the flowers just by stamping so it's good that the coordinating die-cut set is available.

But I plan to give it a try--a clean white background with a delicate stamping would be nice on a greeting card. (I'll keep you posted.)

I'm linking to Simon's Monday challenge, this week's theme is Play with Paint.

Few Passed Them

Here's a post about the way I used Plain Collage Paper (Ideaology) to create a mirror image of a stamp and how to reduce transparency by painting on the back side.

I'm linking up to Simon's Monday challenge--this week's theme is Halloween.

The background is made from various paper scraps tinted with Distress inks and the gate (yes, I know it's upside down) is a die-cut from Tim Holtz called Gothic Gate.

The house and skull are stamp images from a 2016 set called Mini Halloween 5 and the kids are a classic called Photo Studio (Tim Holtz).

I used some words from Ideaology Clippings Stickers and tinted a tiny diamond with red alcohol ink.

As you can see, the house is single-sided but I wanted to create something a little different.

So I stamped the image on Plain Collage Paper then turned it over and stamped the image again on the backside to create a mirror image. They were trimmed and pasted together to create the larger house.

The family was also stamped on the Plain Collage Paper but I painted the backside with off-white paint to reduce the transparency to make sure the facial features didn't get lost. Once the image was pasted down, I used inks to lightly tint it.

I really like the properties of this collage paper and plan to stock-up in case it's discontinued as I have been using it a lot!
