No. 7 for Christmas, 2022

Yes, it's another Christmas tag (I'm on a roll this year) and it features a vintage Santa figure from a Tim Holtz Christmas ephemera release.

I began with a scrapbook paper from Stamperia (Christmas Patchwork) and applied a clear embossed stencil layer (Holiday Script) to act as a resist for some Distress ink tinting. I ironed-off the embossing (see technique here) to keep the background smooth so I could use a tree stencil (Clear Scraps Pine Trees) over the top.

I used a pencil to trace the stencil outline then a brush to fill it in with white paint. The dried brush strokes provided some texture made more visible when I used inks for tinting.

Santa was pasted on next then a border was added using Simon's Tiny Dots stencil and texture paste. Final touches include a Remnant Rub and Stickles.

I'm linking up to Simon's Monday challenge for this week's "Tag" theme.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

No. 2 for Christmas, 2022

Posting another Christmas tag today, this one inspired by a lovely make from Emma Williams (see it here).

The background is a scrapbook page, the wreath was hand-cut from cardboard then heat-embossed with metallic powders and trimmed with Stickles.

I used vellum inside the frame that was lightly distressed with inks on the backside and stamped with heat-embossed text. The scroll is a Remnant Rub.

The holly was die-cut from watercolor paper using a Tim Holtz set called Mixed Media Christmas. After tinting with inks, I used a clear medium and Rock Candy dry glitter to give it some sparkle. The berries were made dimensional with Glossy Accents.

The border was machine-stitched, darkened a bit with distress ink and embellished with more Stickles.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Wildflowers

I experimented with paste medium to level-out a scrap of rice paper embossed with a folder and tinted with stains so I could heat-emboss it with a stamp from Simon (Sunflower Garden).

I'm linking up for Simon's "Emboss It" challenge.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Elizabeth II

Who could not be moved by the most honorable life of Queen Elizabeth II? With respect to her passing, Simon's prompt this week is "Sparkle and Shine" and she certainly was all that and so much more.

"May flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest."

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

In the Moment

I've embraced my wilder side today by creating an experimental tag after one of those "wonder what it would look like if..." moments. Here are the details of my technique.

I began with scrapbook paper for the background that's black with printed glittered bees evenly distributed throughout the page.

Then I heat embossed it with the stamped image (Simon's Floral Garden) and painted the inside of the flowers and leaves white. It was easy to scrape paint off the embossing if I went outside the lines by gently using my X-Acto knife.

I tinted the flowers and darkened some of the wings with Pitt Artist Brush Pens.

The text is a Tim Holtz Chipboard Quote peeled away from the chip board so it would lay flat against the tag and embellished with a line of gold Stickles.

I'm linking up with Simon's Wild and Wonderful challenge.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

John 16:33

Sharing a tag made for the Whatever the Weather challenge at Simon that features the Sideshow stamp by Tim Holtz along with a vintage map stamp by Inkadinkado.

I created a stamp resist with clear embossing powder over an already collaged and tinted background. Then I painted over the entire tag with black paint that was wiped off the embossing when it was almost dry.

Because the original surface was sealed with acrylic, I was able to scrap off the embossing then add color to areas like the map and rain drops with permanent ink.

I did a bit of sanding and scraped in the text which references this quote from the bible:

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Artist Trading Cards

Prompted by Simon's "Artist Trading Card" challenge, may I present this trio made with an image transfer on kraft card stock using the sample ad for the Tim Holtz "Groups" Found Relatives as the background.

The next layer is white heat-embossed stamping (Tim Holtz Mail Art stamp set) along with some Tim Holtz Photobooth pics.

My stock of colored embossing powders is limited so I used permanent inks to tint/tone-down some of the stark white and also used a few strips of Tim Holtz Design Tapes. I painted on the white border.

I don't make many trading cards but if you'd like to see a few more, here's a link

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Christmas Tag No. 1 for 2021

Making Christmas tags by following along with Tim Holtz blog posts way back when was such great fun and I've continued to embrace the tag format ever since.

Nowdays, I use my holiday tags to decorate gifts and today I'm sharing the first one of, hopefully, twelve for this year. (See previous seasons here).

I punched postage-stamp shapes from a heat-embossed stamped image (Penny Black Tree of Holly) and pasted rows of them to create a background.

The poinsettia was stamped (Penny Black Christmas Star), tinted with Distress inks, cut-out and mounted to the surface. I added some fine, black lines for detail and used gold Stickles to trim the flower edges along with my last bottle of Rock Candy Distress Stickles (an absolute favorite product, sadly discontinued).

I stamped then fussy-cut the text (Penny Black Festive Season) and trimmed the tag with Nuvo Glitter Drops, sketchy pen ink and a ribbon topper.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Chickadee

Greeting Card

First time using a new stamp (Whimsy Chickadee), one I had my eye on for awhile, but was a little disappointed once received because it's not trimmed and doesn't have an image on the top side to help with alignment.

I stamped on book paper, tinted with colored pencils and Distress inks, and placed the image behind an oval cut from scrapbook paper (also distressed). I machine-stitched the borders, darkened the edges for accent, added crystal drops from Nuvo and heat-embossed the text.

I'm linking up to Simon's "thinking of you" challenge.

Our Duty

I've used a Found Relative (Tim Holtz) to feature in this tag. Was Halloween just around the corner since this little tyke is wearing what appears to be a uniform jacket (that's a tad too big)?

The flowers were drawn by Alphonse Mucha (clipped from one of his posters) and I also used a torn bit of book paper tinted with inks and embossed with polka dots.

All the collage elements were placed on top of an oversized image of an old envelope that was found in a book on philately.

As I've mentioned before, I find the best way to tint the "relatives" is to use Pitt Artist Brush pens.

I'm linking to Simon's Monday challenge since Halloween is the theme.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Glimmersmitz

greeting card

A head start on Christmas cards? Maybe. But a call to create with "glimmer and sparkle" at the Simon Monday challenge was really the push for making this one. What's Christmas without some shiny bits--am I right?

I used Pink ombré paper (Martha Stewart) covered with Tissue Wrap (Holtz) trimmed to fit around Poinsetta Pieces die-cuts (Holtz) that were cut from a bronze metallic envelope.

Copper Liquid Pearls, some Stickles, and white Scribbles provided the glitz. I heat embossed the white text and outlined one side of the letters with an extra-fine black marker to create a 3D effect.

Glitter Gone Wild

Gitter gone wild is the name of this post for obvious reasons--I used it to embellish this birthday card for my niece. (If you click on the photo to view it in the light box feature you'll see the glitter in more detail.)

I began by stamping (Simon's Delicate Flowers and a Martha Stewart butterfly) on watercolor paper with clear embossing ink and UTEE. Remember this stuff? UTEE stands for ultra thick embossing powder and I guess it fell out of favor because I seldom see anyone using it anymore.

After applying watercolors for tint, I ironed off the embossing. When you do, the weight of the iron spreads the embossing out and you end up with slightly thicker lines that also act as a resist. If you'd like to know more about this technique here's a link to a popular post for the particulars.

I thought I needed more contrast so I outlined the images with a fine-tip black marker. Still not happy, I dug out my glitter (Stickles) and the extra color and sparkle seemed to do the trick.

I used a stencil (Simon's Tiny Dots) with white texture paste, a Simon die-cut for the sentiment and machine-stitched it to the card base using white thread.

Simon Says use heat embossing this week so I'm linking up to the Monday challenge.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Sent On This Day

Valentine Card

Happy Valentine's Day! I hope everyone gets a giant box of chocolates, a big bouquet of flowers plus a big fat hug from someone you love.

I'm sharing a card made for the occasion (and my dear friend, Thelma) that started with a prompt from Simon's Monday challenge to use a "resist technique."

A heart stencil was clear embossed over a scrap of Paper Stash and covered with off-white paint that was wiped off the raised embossing before it dried. Then I ironed-off the embossing (here's a link to the technique) which gives it a mottled appearance I rather like.

I cut the heart out and pasted it on more Paper Stash, added a stamped strip of polka dots, a Paper Doll figure, book text, and fussy-cut butterflies.

I admit an obsession with 3D paint dots and used them to embellish the borders. I may need to seek treatment for this disorder ☺.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Beautiful to Me

Shaker Greeting Card

Simon says, "make a shaker card." What?! Never done that before but sure, why not? I had to find some how-to videos to get an idea of where to begin and, in the end, I have a new appreciation for this engineering feat.

Mine was made using a piece of craft foam as the dam behind a thin piece of acetate. I used a black Sharpie to disguise the foam edges, filled it with vintage glitter (circa 1920-30), covered it with a die-cut page from an old book (Simon Says Stamp Devonshire) and made some paper punch lace (Martha Stewart).

I re-cut the butterfly out of black paper and placed it over the acetate and heat embossed text (Simon Says Stamp Delicate Flowers) using black ink and clear powder.

The background page is from Prima Epiphany and it was mounted on black card stock. I always line the insides of my black cards with a piece of light paper so you can write on it with a regular pen. A little Distress Ink and some white paint splatters completed the look.

I had no idea how much glitter to use and may have used too much and the hardest part? Figuring out how to line up and paste the shaker on the front of the card while working with it upside down so the glitter wouldn't fall out. If I make any more, I should probably watch a few more videos ☺.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Craftman

This is Craftman, the super-hero who saves the day by helping artists create and play. And where there's play there's happy and the world could sure use a whole lot more of that right now.

The background was made using an emboss resist technique where I stamped (Tim Holtz Dots & Floral) with clear embossing ink and powder on a piece of light card stock. Then it was covered with black paint and wiped off the embossing before it was completely dry. Here's an old tutorial from the Tim Holtz blog where I learned the technique.

The map is a piece of Tim Holtz ephemera made thinner (almost see-thru) by peeling off the back and using a little water and my finger to rub away the paper bits.

Craftman (Tim Holtz Sideshow) was stamped on light paper with Vintage Photo Distress ink and fussy-cut. The flower pot was cut out of a coloring book.

It was mounted on a piece of light gray card stock and I machine-stitched the border. I'm linking up to Simon's Monday challenge--this week "it's a man thing."

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

12 Tags for Christmas 2019 - Twinkle

Making Christmas tag number two was a bit like decorating a cake! And since I used vintage buttons, I'm linking this one to Simon's Recycle challenge this week.

I began with a tag shape cut from some Tim Holtz Halloween paper (Abandoned) then I inked snowflake stencils with Versamark and embossed the shapes with clear powder.

The next step was to use a resist technique where you paint (or in this case, gesso'd) over the embossing and let it dry only slightly before wiping the paint off the embossed areas. Don't expect perfection with this technique--it's really meant for a distressed look.

My great Aunt Esther snipped many a button from her frocks over the years and I inherited quite a collection. I keep the little white buttons in one box and have another, bigger box with colored buttons in larger sizes. I gathered up an assortment and pasted them on.

I lightly tinted the background with Faded Jeans Distress Oxide and frosted the cake tag with glitter glues and dimensional paint (Scribbles and Stickles).

I always feel my tags need some kind of border. Since I used buttons, I reinforced the sewing theme by machine-stitching a mini zig-zag with green thread.

Stayed tuned for more tags--I appear to be on a roll--ha! Hope it lasts :-)

12 Tags for Christmas 2019 - Father Christmas

My first Christmas tag of the year features a vintage image of Santa mounted on kraft card stock and embossed with gold polka dots.

This close-up shows the glitter I applied on the banner, around the oval and on the tree branches.

I'm linking this post to Simon this week because the theme is "Recycle" and I've included some photos to explain.

The tag was made from the back of an empty drawing paper pad (I save all quality cardboard just for this purpose).

I pasted my laser-printed image onto some packaging material before cutting it out. The material had a slick surface so to make sure I got a good bond using my glue stick, I sanded the surface before applying the image.

And finally, I like to use scraps of craft foam sheets when I want to lift an image from the surface to create some dimension. I just cut it to size and use some glue.

Look for more Christmas tags in the days and weeks to come (it's only 34 days away) and if you'd like to see more tags from previous years, here's a link.

Unrequited Love

I've got a lot of pics to share today that illustrate the steps I took to create this journal page made for Simon's Monday challenge this week.

Art journaling can be/should be somewhat spontaneous and you'll see by the process that unfolded for this page, nothing was set in stone and I changed directions a few times.

Being flexible and just "going with the flow" is what makes the experience fun. Not to mention what you might learn along the way!

I began with transcribing a document then pasted word strips cut from it onto the page.

I covered the page with gesso and tinted some sections with gray then sanded it a bit.

I transcribed the last paragraph of my document over the top using a Fude Ball 1.5 pen.

The ink was taking FOREVER to dry so I sprinkled clear embossing powder on it and heat-set. It was messy but did the trick and I like the emphasis and durability it provided.

I used a vintage stamping set (circa 2008) and applied the flowers with black archival ink.

I wanted to create the illusion of flowers growing over and around a brick wall so I printed a photo of some brick, tore out sections and used my image transfer technique.

As you can see, the wall was modified quite a bit later in the process but proved to be a good jumping-off point which was just what I needed.

I used shades of gray to blend in the wall and began to tint the page with craft paints.

I didn't worry too much about "staying inside the lines" but the paint did blur the stamping so I went over the lines with a black pen marker.

Here's the finished product--it's a two-page spread in a Ranger Dylusions journal (8" x 11"):

Some details I didn't photograph but are worth mentioning: I used the Dot Fade stencil and white paint to unify the page and added the butterfly (cut from Tissue Wrap) along with some Collage Paper leaves (Tim Holtz products).

Happy Birthday Thelma

Thelma (my good friend who got me started stamping) has a BIG milestone birthday coming up and this is the card I made for her.

Nothing ground-breaking to talk about technique-wise but I would like to mention the flower garland because it was hand-drawn by me after a few simple lessons from the queen of coloring books--Johanna Basford. She has a new book coming out this month that teaches her drawing methods.

I gave the garland some color with my Polychromos then cut it out and pasted it onto scrapbook paper.

The cardstock I mounted it on couldn't be a standard card size so I found some really great instructions here for how to make an envelope in ONE MINUTE. Really!

Then I decorated the envelope using inspiration from Kristina Werner and realize I need more interesting postage stamps for the next time I do this. (No pics for privacy reasons.)

I wonder if the post office would mind if I used a real stamp along with some fake ones like these? I'll have to try it and then let you know.
