Beautiful to Me

Shaker Greeting Card

Simon says, "make a shaker card." What?! Never done that before but sure, why not? I had to find some how-to videos to get an idea of where to begin and, in the end, I have a new appreciation for this engineering feat.

Mine was made using a piece of craft foam as the dam behind a thin piece of acetate. I used a black Sharpie to disguise the foam edges, filled it with vintage glitter (circa 1920-30), covered it with a die-cut page from an old book (Simon Says Stamp Devonshire) and made some paper punch lace (Martha Stewart).

I re-cut the butterfly out of black paper and placed it over the acetate and heat embossed text (Simon Says Stamp Delicate Flowers) using black ink and clear powder.

The background page is from Prima Epiphany and it was mounted on black card stock. I always line the insides of my black cards with a piece of light paper so you can write on it with a regular pen. A little Distress Ink and some white paint splatters completed the look.

I had no idea how much glitter to use and may have used too much and the hardest part? Figuring out how to line up and paste the shaker on the front of the card while working with it upside down so the glitter wouldn't fall out. If I make any more, I should probably watch a few more videos ☺.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Happiness

Ah, the merry, merry month of May...

The high temp today in my neck of the woods was 104°F.  A bit warmer than normal, to be sure, but pleasant just the same as May means the crowds are thinning out and the pace is beginning to slow--a precursor of the quiet peace that comes with the heat.

My tag was made to celebrate the great outdoors which is the theme this week for the Monday challenge blog at Simon Says Stamp.

It was an opportunity to use a new Tim Holtz stencil called Floral which I fell in love with after seeing Paula Cheney's Instagram post and was the inspiration for the colors I used.

Rather than use a monoprint technique as she did, I opted to use texture medium over a text background then sanded it down before tinting with Distress inks. The medium helped to resist the ink and retain the stencil pattern.

The moths were cut from a discontinued Tim Holtz paper stash called Kraft Resist which I tinted with Distress markers and a white gel pen. The text is from the new Idea-ology Clippings stickers.

I didn't use machine stitching for the accents because the texture medium just didn't want to feed through smoothly. So, I opted for my backup method which is a good technique for those who don't have a machine.

I use a piece of cardboard placed under the tag and punch holes for my hand stitching with a "pin tool." It's a leftover from my days making pottery but I think it would be easy enough to find a substitute to punch the tiny holes needed. Pre-punching makes the stitching so much easier and it's a curiously pleasant task!

It's also a great method when accuracy is a must as I have more control punching than I do keeping my foot steady on the sewing machine pedal. A simple backstitch is all it takes to complete it.

12 Tags for Christmas - December

As the year comes to a close, I'm posting a final tag for 2015 which will link to Tim's monthly tag along with Simon's Monday blog challenge.

I used Tim's four smallish Christmas Collage stamps for the background by stamping on Distress-tinted tissue paper, cutting out various parts and pasting to the tag in a new arrangement.

An oval was cut from the middle, a photo from Tim's Merriment paper stash pasted behind it then tiny paper-punched oak leaves were tinted, glittered and pasted on.

Perfect Pearls and Stickles were used to embellish the borders along with a tiny bow and some Remant Rubs.

I expect the reason we love vintage (and Christmas) so much is because it takes us back to happier times.

The children here certainly had a different experience from kids growing up today.

And if there was a soundtrack running as you view this tag, it would be John Lennon's song which I believe is more poignant now than when it was written given the turbulent events of this past year:

So this is Christmas, and what have you done
Another year over and a new one just begun

And so this is Christmas, I hope you have fun
The near and the dear ones, the old and the young

A very merry Christmas, and a happy New Year
(let's hope it's a good one, without any fear)

Duchess

My post is titled "Duchess" because it is the name of the scrapbook paper (by Kaiser Craft) that I used to make this greeting card. There's no sense providing a link to it as I bought it awhile ago and it is now out of production.

But I can show you what the paper originally looked like:

I cut out one of the design elements and pasted it to metallic bronze card stock after creating a border with a paper punch. Then I went to task embellishing it with colored pencils, Stickles and Scribbles (a 3-D paint). I mounted it to olive green card stock which was folded for use as a greeting card.

I plan to use it as a Christmas card and have linked it to the Monday blog challenge at SSS where the theme is ornaments.  I will admit, I'm getting excited about the upcoming holiday season because there's no better time to use my Stickles and I do love them so!
